Learn how to make an air fryer T-bone steak an ultra simple way with minimal seasonings. Just perfectly cooked, medium-rare steak with a gorgeous crust on the outside and a juicy pink inside.
I have to admit, I was a little nervous about air frying steak. The thick cut t-bone steak we bought was half off, but it still cost a pretty penny and I didn't want to ruin it! I am pleased to report that it all worked out and I will continue to make air fryer steak in the future because boy was it simple and tasty.
I love a good grilled steak, but not having to fire up the grill is going to come in handy this winter! Plus, the mess is all contained to the air fryer device and my Ninja Foodi is super easy to clean.
Tips for a great t bone steak in the air fryer
- Take the meat out of the fridge 30-60 minutes before cooking to ensure it is at room temperature. This may seem silly, but it is necessary for making sure the steak cooks evenly and isn't overcooked on the outside and raw in the middle.
- Use a coarse sea salt to help give a nice crust to the outside of the meat and enhance the flavor.
- If you would like, you can add other seasonings to the steak like garlic powder, onion powder, or any of your favorite steakhouse seasoning blends.
- My air fryer only fits one large steak at a time, so if you have multiple t-bone steaks, you may have to work in stages.
- Swap out olive oil for butter or ghee for coating the steaks if you would like.

How to make an air fryer t-bone steak
30-60 minutes before you plan to cook your steak, place it on the counter to allow to come up to room temperature.
Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees F for 5 minutes.
While it is preheating, coat steak in a bit of olive oil and then press in salt and pepper.
Gently place t-bone steak into the air fryer basket and close device.
For medium-rare, set to 8-10 minutes of cook time and flip the meat halfway through, around the 4-5 minute mark.
This cook time is dependant on the thickness of your steak, For a very thick t bone or depending on how you like your steak cooked, you may need more time.
Allow to rest on a plate for 5 minutes before cutting into.
Steak temperatures for doneness
The best way to determine doneness is by using a meat thermometer. I have this one and it works well. Test the thickest part of the steak for an accurate temperature read.
Remember that meat will continue cooking for a few minutes after being removed from the heat source and will go up around 5 degrees.
Use the following guide to reach desired doneness. The time for cooking a steak in the air fryer will vary not only by thickness, but also your personal preferences.
- Rare 125 F
- Medium Rare 135 F
- Medium 145 F
- Well 155 F
How to serve
A good t-bone steak can stand on it's own or be paired with a delicious sauce like A1 or Tarragon Cream Sauce. Or replicate the peppercorn sauce from this Bavette Steak Recipe.
On the side try ninja foodi mashed potatoes or a classic baked potato or baked sweet potato.
Finish with soy sauce mushrooms and roasted broccoli on the side.
