Sweet potatoes are delicious any time of year, not just as a side dish during Thanksgiving- though Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes are delicious!

This stovetop sweet potato recipe is super easy to make, with just a bit of dicing and time. This method of preparing is also completely customizable to your tastes, as you can switch up the seasonings to suit whatever you would like.

For more delicious sweet potato recipes, we love them as a base in Mexican Sweet Potatoes with Chicken and as an alternative to regular potatoes in Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes.

Ingredients

ingredients for sauteed sweet potatoes on a metal baking sheet.
  • Sweet potato: Though sweet potatoes can vary in size dramatically, 2-3 medium sized sweet potatoes are generally enough for 4 servings. Choose sweet potatoes that are firm and free from blemishes.
  •  Avocado oil: Use a high heat, neutral oil like avocado oil to cook these in. Coconut oil is another good option.
  •  Spices: For a classic flavor combination use garlic powder and paprika. See below for additional flavor combination ideas.

For a full list of ingredients and their measurements, see the recipe card below.

  • Cumin and Chili Powder
  • Italian Seasoning

Step 6. Add seasoning at the end and give one final stir before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • A cast iron skillet is great for sauteing sweet potatoes on the stove because it heats well and can hold a lot at once.
  • If you don't have a large enough skillet, you may have to work in batches.
  • If your sweet potatoes have soaked up all the oil from cooking, it can be helpful to add a tiny drizzle of additional oil along with the spices at the end to help them stick to the potatoes.
  • Sauteed sweet potatoes will take around 15 minutes to cook (depending on how big the pieces are and how full the pan is). Because of this, using a high heat oil such as avocado oil or refined coconut oil is advised over something like extra virgin olive oil.

What to Serve with Sauteed Sweet Potatoes

This pan fried sweet potatoes recipe is delicious on it's own as a tasty snack, but they are great for meal prep as well and can be incorporated into lots of recipes.

  • Use them as part of breakfast sweet potato hash
  • With steak (such as bavette steak or air fryer t bone steak)
  • As a salad topping
  • Alongside Creamy Boursin Chicken
  • Dip them in Gochujang Aioli for a tasty snack.

Storage and Reheating

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Cooked sweet potatoes can be reheated in the microwave or back on the stove or in the air fryer for more crispness.

Recipe FAQs

Do you have to peel sweet potatoes before cooking?

No you don't. The skin is actually a super nutritious part of the sweet potato, and you can leave it on if you prefer.

Do you need to soak sweet potatoes before cooking?

This isn't necessary but it does help ensure a crispy outside and a soft and fluffy center.
