These Guacamole Deviled Eggs are the perfect party appetizer and a fun, spicy twist on a classic recipe.
Traditional deviled eggs are about as classic an appetizer as they come, but I decided to add a fun and spicy twist to the classic egg recipe with the addition of avocado.
I love a fun new twist on a great appetizer. Just check out these Jalapeno Popper Stuffed Mushrooms and these Jalapeno Popper Wontons and of course, these Mini Cobb Salad Kabobs.
There's no mayo or sour cream in this delicious recipe - the creaminess comes from the creamy avocado, which provides healthy fats and a delicious upgrade to the traditional recipe for deviled eggs.
The eggs are just slightly spicy with the addition of the jalapeno. It's a great recipe to take to parties and provides an unexpected surprise in flavor.
These eggs are the perfect appetizer for game day, St. Patrick's day, Cinco De Mayo, or really any gathering.
Ingredient Notes
- Hard boiled eggs - Use large eggs so they're easiest to fill and work with.
- Avocado - Ripe avocados are necessary to get the perfect deviled egg avocado mixture. Don't use any parts of the avocado with brown spots.
- Shallot - The subtle flavor of the shallot provides just enough onion flavor to the guacamole mixture.
- Fresh cilantro - I highly recommend fresh cilantro over dried. This gives the delicious fresh guacamole flavor needed for the tasty twist in this fantastic appetizer.
- Fresh lime juice - The lime juice provides a fresh tangy flavor to the guacamole. It's this citrusy flavor these eggs need and pairs just right with the spiciness of the jalapeno.
- Jalapeno - Chop your jalapeno as fine as you can. Leave out the seeds unless you want your eggs extra spicy.
Variations and Substitutions
If you don't have a shallot, you can substitute a little red onion.
I love the taste of the fresh jalapeno, but you can substitute the jarred or canned jalapeno if you don't have fresh on hand.
How to Make Guacamole Deviled Eggs
Step 1. Start by hard boiling the eggs. Everyone has their own methods for hard boiling, but I add the eggs to the water, place it on the stove and bring it up to a boil. As soon as it starts to boil, cover it and turn the heat off. Wait 15 minutes and the eggs will be perfect.
Step 2. Peel your eggs and slice in half vertically.
Step 3. To a small mixing bowl, add cooked yolks, chopped cilantro, avocado, chopped jalapeno, salt, and chopped shallots.
Step 4. Mix well with a fork until creamy and smooth. Fill the cooked egg whites with your yolk mixture using a spoon, pastry bag, or whatever is easiest.
If you would like some extra decoration, top the eggs with a thinly sliced piece of jalapeno.
Recipe Tips
- Perfect hard-boiled eggs - I add the eggs to the water, place it on the stove and bring it up to a boil. As soon as it starts to boil, cover it and turn the heat off and wait 15 minutes before removing the eggs. You can also cook them in the Instant Pot or pressure cooker. Just add a cup of water to the pot, place your eggs on the trivet, close the lid and cook on high pressure for 5 minutes. Do a 5 minute natural release of the pressure and then quick release the rest of the way. Remove the eggs and place in a bowl of ice cold water to cool for 5 minutes. Here's my tips for Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs.
- Peeling - Peel the eggs while they're warm. This makes the process smooth and the shells come off without pulling off lots of egg white. Once they cool completely, all bets are off. I also like to keep them wet by cracking them in the pot of water they boiled in. Both of these help loosen the membrane, which is often the culprit for difficult to peel eggs.
- Creamy filling - The avocado is what makes the filling creamy. Mix well with a fork and you should be golden. I find the lime juice helps too.
- Filling the white halves - It may be easiest to fill a piping bag with the guacamole egg yolk mixture and pipe it into the egg whites using a large tip. You can also use a large spoon.
